A Report on Student Transfers Under the No Child Left Behind Act

Download PDF 1.64 MB
More families are benefiting from the school choice mandates of No Child Left Behind than is generally recognized, according to a report by the Citizens' Comission on Civil Rights. But incomplete data might have greatly underestimated the actual number of students who applied to transfer or actually did so. The commission called on the U.S. Department of Education to "enforce the data collection and reporting provisions of the law." Further, most states ranked the choice provisions as a low priority and did little to help districts carry them out effectively.

Student-Led Conferences Conway Middle School: Student-Led Conferences
Download PDF 165 KB
Student-led conferences spotlight the most important person in the process (the student); improve parent involvement; and bring students to the point where they ask their teachers, “How can I make my work better?” Student-led conferences put the students in charge, holding them responsible and accountable as they present their work to their parents. This type of conference is a natural progression in the quest for a Standards-based school.

Helping Your Child Learn History

Children are born into history. They have no memory of it, yet they find themselves in the middle of a story that began before they became one of its characters. Children also want to have a place in history—their first historical questions are: “Where did I come from?” and “Was I always here?” These two questions contain the two main meanings of history: It’s the story of people and events, and it’s the record of times past. And because it’s to us that they address these questions, we are in the best position to help prepare our children to achieve the lifelong task of finding their place in history by helping them learn what shaped the world into which they were born. Without information about their history, children don’t “get” a lot of what they hear and see around them.

New Brief on Investing in Parents so Children and Youth Succeed Source: National Human Services Assembly
Retrieved November 30, 2007

Strengthening parents and their connections to resources can help children thrive. A recently published brief from the National Human Services Assembly looks at how a "parenting success" strategy can be used to strengthen families and communities. It discusses delivering effective family-centered services and provides recommendations for community groups, agencies, funders and policymakers on how to maximize impact . It is available at
http://www.nassembly.org/fspc/documents/FSPPolicyBrief2210-30.pdf

This brief provides a blueprint for state and local policymakers, early learning administrators, teachers, families, community leaders, and researchers to use effective preschool curricula and teaching strategies to help low-income young children close the achievement gap in early literacy and math to be ready for kindergarten like their more affluent peers. It is part of a series of publications from the Pathways to Early School Success project of NCCP that addresses the question: “What will it take to ensure that young low-income children succeed in the early school years?”
