What Is Reading? What Is Reading?
Download PDF 70KB
(You will need to make copies). This handout shares with parents some specific information about what reading entails – which is much more than “Hooked on Phonics.” This handout provides an overview of what kinds of skills are required to be a proficient reader – such as the ability to comprehend what one reads, building a vocabulary, and developing fluency in reading. Have parents talk about how they remember learning to read and the different ways they were taught as children. Then have them generate ideas on ways to encourage children’s reading, such as visiting the local library, using the “mute” button on the TV’s remote control and having children read the captions, etc.
