Founders acknowledge that the concept of the program – called Heritage Language – might irk those who would say any money and efforts should be spent on teaching these students English. But school officials argue that educators nationwide understand that English-language learners benefit from literacy instruction in their native language.

Online Tool Kit Helps Turn Schools Into Literacy Stars
International Reading Association


In honor of International Literacy Day, Rotary International and the International Reading Association developed Every School a Star, a web-based resource designed to help Rotary clubs and IRA reading councils carry out literacy projects. Available in English, the kit includes examples of successful club and district literacy projects, needs assessment questionnaires, and a teachers' wish list.
