The
purpose of this guide from Public Education
Network is to make the process of school finance litigation more
accessible, and to suggest roles that local education funds (LEFs),
community based organizations, and concerned individuals can play
-- both
in supporting litigation that seeks more funding for lower wealth
districts, and in furthering our collective efforts to ensure a quality
public education for all children. This year's "Guide to Public
Engagement and School Finance Litigation" includes recent developments
in
key cases, as well as additional information and resources that will
be
helpful to anyone seeking to learn more about, or become involved
with,
school finance litigation.

The South Carolina Family Friendly Workplace Award was created to
recognize businesses from all sectors of South Carolina who consistently
demonstrate family friendly practices through workplace programs and
policies. “Family Friendly” is a broad term referring
to a work environment that seeks to support employees’ needs
outside of the workplace. Specifically, family friendly workplaces
establish and sustain programs and policies meant to ease the stress
inherent in managing both job and family responsibilities. This is
an example of the application South Carolina created for their Family
Friendly Workplace Award.

MAYORAL
LEADERSHIP & INVOLVEMENT IN EDUCATION
As the role of mayors in reforming public education increases, the
U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) believes there is a need to assist
mayors as they choose how to get involved and at what level of engagement.
A new "Action Guide" provides principles, suggestions and
ideas for mayoral leadership and involvement. It also explains the
political, financial and bureaucratic problems with which mayors are
confronted when they become involved in public education. Four central
themes on mayoral leadership and involvement in education are emphasized
in the Action Guide: advocacy, capacity, implementation and sustainability.
