A Place of Our Own

KCET’s A Place of Our Own (and Los Niños en Su Casa) is a daily television series, a website, and an extensive outreach program devoted to the unique needs of people who care for children. Family, friends and neighbors – everyone who takes care of young children – are child care providers. Every interaction and every activity of these adults with their charges provide valuable opportunities to help children learn and grow. A Place of Our Own shares ways for us all to help children acquire cognitive, social, emotional and physical skills, as well as nurture language and literacy development.

Pre-K Now

resource thumbnail

Choosing a high-quality pre-k program is one of the most important decisions a parent will make; so it is vital that families are equipped for the search. It can be hard to find a high-quality program that is convenient, and parents in states without publicly funded, voluntary pre-k for all may have trouble locating an affordable program. Even when pre-k programs are plentiful, many parents need guidance to evaluate their options and pick the program that is best for their child. The quality checklist and resources provided below will help parents make confident, informed pre-k decisions.

Video: "What Children Learn in Pre-K"

resource thumbnail

"What Children Learn in Pre-K" tells the stories of five young children who had an opportunity that is still unavailable to millions of children in the U.S.: the opportunity to attend a high-quality pre-kindergarten program. We were privileged to follow Erika, Nataya, Cesar, William, and Gillian—as well as their classmates, family members, and teachers—for a full school year. We saw how quality pre-k helps all children prepare for success in school and in life, and through the short video below we want to share what we witnessed.
