How to Help: Provide Guidance -- Helping Your Child With Homework

On the U.S. Department of Education site, the plum-and-brown graphics may be a turnoff, but the homework advice scores. Among its tips: When children haven't done their best work, point it out — but be constructive. "Instead of telling a sixth-grader, 'You aren't going to hand in that mess, are you?' say, 'The teacher will understand your ideas better if you use your best handwriting.' "
