Working With Parents: Strengthening Families

The Working with Parents videos are the result of work from Lynn McDonald who piloted the Families and Schools Together (FAST) program at Beacon Primary School, located in a challenging Liverpool community in the UK. The school recruited 14 families to take part in the American-style community-building program. Over seven weeks, the families took part in activities, such as singing and cooking together, and discovered what a sense of community feels like. These videos show how links between communities and schools can affect children’s welfare and education. Some of the topics include: supporting parents across communities; strengthening the family; the strengthening families, strengthening communities approach; and social isolation and parenting.

Parent Leadership: Successful Strategies

Although public policies governing education, health and human services and family support have promoted parent leadership for years, State and local programs often have encountered many challenges in engaging parents in leadership roles. This “successful strategies” document shares lessons from parents and organizations that have led the way. It is designed to help Community-Based Family Resource and Support (CBFRS) programs promote and expand parent leadership.

Parent Involvement: Keys to Success

Developed by experts at the National Center for Family Literacy in partnership with the Appalachia Regional Comprehensive Center at Edvantia, this series of podcasts provides information and strategies for educators at state, district, and school levels to increase parent involvement in student learning in ways that support student and school success.
