The Education Innovator Volume IX, No. 5In this issue of The Education Innovator, a new era of parent and family engagement – one informed by a "skyscraper full of research" concerning the role that parent, family, and community engagements play in children's learning and success in school – is explored. Both a national working group of key stakeholders in parent and family engagement and the national network of Parental Information and Resource Centers are working hard to ensure success in this new era. Family Engagement: A Critical Component to Building An Empowering Culture in the Kansas Multi-Tier System of SupportFamily engagement is a key aspect of Kansas MTSS. Within the Kansas Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS) framework, an empowering culture is a key component that supports the effective instruction of students. Families should be involved from the beginning as a school creates an empowering culture to support implementation of MTSS. Families need information on how MTSS will impact their children. This includes understanding what data will be collected, how it will be used and what supports will be provided to their child. Collaboration for Academic, Social, and Emotional LearningCASEL was founded in 1994 by Daniel Goleman, the author of Emotional Intelligence, and educator/philanthropist Eileen Rockefeller Growald. CASEL's first years focused on gathering scientific evidence to demonstrate the contributions of social and emotional learning to students' school success, health, well-being, peer and family relationships, and citizenship. While still conducting scientific research and reviewing the best available science evidence, over time CASEL has increasingly worked to provide SEL practitioners and school administrators with the guidelines, tools, informational resources, policies, training, and supports they need to improve and expand their SEL programming. Social Emotional Learning and Bullying PreventionWhile bullying is a pervasive problem in many schools, schools can take specific steps to improve the school climate and encourage positive interactions designed to reduce or prevent bullying. Schools using a social and emotional learning (SEL) framework can foster an overall climate of inclusion, warmth, and respect, and promote the development of core social and emotional skills among both students and staff. Because bullying prevention is entirely congruent with SEL, it can be embedded in a school’s SEL framework. The aims of this brief are to (a) provide a basic description of a school-wide SEL framework, (b) illustrate the relationship between social and emotional factors and bullying, and (c) explain how an SEL framework can be extended to include bullying prevention. Working With Parents: Strengthening FamiliesThe Working with Parents videos are the result of work from Lynn McDonald who piloted the Families and Schools Together (FAST) program at Beacon Primary School, located in a challenging Liverpool community in the UK. The school recruited 14 families to take part in the American-style community-building program. Over seven weeks, the families took part in activities, such as singing and cooking together, and discovered what a sense of community feels like. These videos show how links between communities and schools can affect children’s welfare and education. Some of the topics include: supporting parents across communities; strengthening the family; the strengthening families, strengthening communities approach; and social isolation and parenting. Collaborating with FamiliesThe IRIS Center and the PACER Center have created an interactive, online module to support educators in diversifying and improving family participation in school. In the module, a principal and staff demonstrate how they gain information about of their students' families because this helps them best engage all members of a family in education. Many schools enjoy a high level of parental involvement from some families, but schools should be ever-interested in increasing involvement, especially among families of students with disabilities.
